In Jordan Peele’s 2017 horror film Get Out, Chris Washington’s girlfriend is named Rose Armitage.
Rose invites Chris, a Black photographer, to meet her white family at their secluded country home. What initially appears to be an awkward visit gradually reveals a conspiracy involving the Armitage family and the transfer of consciousness between bodies.
Allison Williams plays Rose, while Daniel Kaluuya plays Chris. Rose’s apparently reassuring manner is important to the film’s tension because Chris initially believes she will protect him from the family’s unsettling behavior. The revelation of her complicity changes the meaning of earlier scenes and conversations.
Rose is sometimes remembered simply as Chris’s white girlfriend, but her full character name is Rose Armitage. The surname connects her to Dean and Missy Armitage, her parents, and to Jeremy Armitage, her brother. Peele’s film uses the horror plot to examine racism, exploitation, and performative liberalism.
