In Japanese mythology, Raijin is the deity associated with thunder, lightning, and storms.
Raijin, also called Raijin-sama or Raiden, is a powerful kami of thunder and lightning. He is usually portrayed as a fierce figure surrounded by drums, which he beats to create thunder. The circular arrangement of drums is one of the most recognizable features of his artistic representation.
Raijin is often shown together with Fujin, the wind deity. Their pairing reflects the connected forces of storms, but they have distinct identities: Raijin governs thunder and lightning, while Fujin governs wind. This distinction is a frequent source of confusion in images where both appear side by side.
Raijin’s imagery developed through interaction among Shinto, Buddhist, and broader East Asian traditions. He can appear frightening, yet thunder deities were also connected with rain and agricultural fertility. In popular culture, his name remains widely recognized through art, literature, games, and manga.
