In James Cameron’s Avatar, which actor plays Dr. Grace Augustine on Pandora?
Answer
Sigourney Weaver
In James Cameron’s Avatar, Sigourney Weaver plays Dr. Grace Augustine on Pandora.
Grace Augustine is a botanist and head of the Avatar Program, which uses artificially grown Na’vi-human hybrid bodies to let human operators interact with Pandora. Weaver portrays Grace as a highly experienced scientist who advocates studying the moon’s ecology and communicating with the Na’vi rather than treating Pandora solely as a source of resources.
The role reunited Weaver with director James Cameron after their collaboration on Aliens, in which she played Ellen Ripley. Avatar also stars Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, and Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch.
Grace’s scientific work is closely tied to the film’s central conflict between research, corporate extraction, military force, and Indigenous sovereignty. Weaver returned to the franchise in later Avatar films in different narrative roles, but Grace Augustine is her principal character in the original 2009 film.
