In James Cameron’s Avatar, Eywa is the Na’vi spiritual deity connected with Pandora’s living network.
The Na’vi understand Eywa as a guiding, life-sustaining presence linking the organisms of Pandora. The film depicts this connection through neural bonds between Na’vi, animals, and certain plants. Eywa is therefore both a religious concept and a major part of the film’s ecological world-building.
The human characters initially interpret Pandora through scientific and commercial goals, especially the search for unobtanium. The story gradually presents evidence that the moon’s life forms are interconnected in ways the human visitors had underestimated. Eywa’s role becomes especially important during the conflict between the Na’vi and the human military operation.
Eywa is not the same as Pandora itself. Pandora is the moon’s name; Eywa is the Na’vi name for the spiritual and biological force associated with its planetary network. The exact spelling is capitalized as a proper name.
