In James Cameron’s Avatar, the Na’vi inhabit the moon Pandora. The moon orbits the fictional gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system.
Pandora is the main setting of the 2009 science-fiction film. Humans travel there to mine unobtanium, a valuable fictional mineral, while scientists study its ecosystems and the Na’vi people. The protagonist, Jake Sully, uses a remotely operated avatar body to interact with Pandora’s environment and inhabitants.
The film’s Pandora is unrelated to the ancient Greek woman, although Cameron chose a name with mythological associations. The moon’s forests, floating mountains, wildlife, and interconnected biological systems are central parts of the film’s world-building.
A common mix-up is calling Pandora a planet. In Avatar, it is specifically a moon, while Polyphemus is the gas giant around which it orbits.
