In James Cameron’s Avatar, what is the name of the human–Na’vi language spoken on Pandora?

The story behind the answer

In James Cameron’s Avatar, the human–Na’vi language spoken on Pandora is called Na’vi.

Na’vi was created for the film by linguist Paul Frommer. It was designed to sound distinct from familiar human languages while remaining pronounceable for the actors and audiences. The language is used by the Na’vi people and by human characters who learn to communicate with them.

The film Avatar was released in 2009 and is set largely on Pandora, a fictional moon inhabited by the Na’vi. The language has a developed grammar, vocabulary, and writing conventions, allowing fans to study and use it beyond the dialogue heard in the film.

Na’vi should not be confused with the name Pandora itself. Pandora is the setting; Na’vi is both the language name and the term for the humanoid species that speaks it.
