Pandora orbits the fictional gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system. Humans travel there in the mid-22nd century to mine unobtanium, a valuable mineral, while scientists study the moon's biology and its indigenous Na'vi population.
The film's setting is sometimes casually called a planet, but Pandora is specifically described as a moon. Its dense forests, floating mountains, and interconnected life forms were central to the movie's visual identity and environmental themes.
Pandora should not be confused with the real Saturnian moon of the same name. The real Pandora is a small, irregular moon discovered in 1980, whereas Avatar's Pandora is a fictional world created for Cameron's story. The film was released in December 2009 and became a major commercial success.
