In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which ancient city contains the temple holding the Holy Grail?

The story behind the answer

In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the ancient city containing the temple holding the Holy Grail is Petra.

The film’s climax takes place at the fictional Canyon of the Crescent Moon, whose entrance is represented by Al-Khazneh, or the Treasury, at Petra in modern-day Jordan. Indiana Jones and Elsa Schneider enter the temple after following clues from the Grail Diary and crossing the canyon.

Petra was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom, a trading power whose monuments were carved into sandstone cliffs. Al-Khazneh is one of the archaeological site’s best-known façades, although the movie’s interior chambers and underground temple spaces were filmed on sets rather than inside the real monument.

The film therefore combines a genuine Jordanian landmark with fictional locations and religious archaeology. Petra is often mistakenly described as the entire Grail temple, but only its exterior was used as the iconic entrance.
