In "Ice Age: Continental Drift", what kind of animal is Manny?

The story behind the answer

In Ice Age: Continental Drift, Manny is a mammoth—specifically a woolly mammoth. He is the central leader of the herd and one of the franchise's main characters.

Manny is introduced as a solitary, guarded mammoth in the first Ice Age film, but he gradually forms a close family with Sid the sloth and Diego the saber-toothed cat. In Ice Age: The Meltdown, he meets Ellie, another mammoth who was raised by opossums and mistakenly believes she is one herself. Manny and Ellie later become mates and parents to their daughter, Peaches.

In Continental Drift, Manny is especially protective of Peaches as she enters adolescence. A continental breakup separates Manny from Ellie and Peaches, leaving him stranded on an ice floe with Sid, Diego, and Granny. Their journey brings them into conflict with Captain Gutt's pirate crew. The character is sometimes mistaken for a generic elephant, but Manny belongs to the extinct mammoth family, adapted to the Ice Age environment with thick fur and large curved tusks.
