In How to Train Your Dragon, what species of dragon is Toothless?

In How to Train Your Dragon, Toothless is a Night Fury.

Toothless is the dragon companion of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, the central human character in the franchise. Hiccup finds him injured after a nighttime encounter and gradually earns his trust instead of killing him. The name “Toothless” comes from the dragon’s retractable teeth, which can slide back into his gums.

The Night Fury is presented as an exceptionally rare and powerful dragon species. Toothless can fly at great speed, maneuver sharply, and fire explosive plasma blasts. His abilities make him important to both the story’s action and its themes of cooperation and understanding.

The animated films later introduce the Light Fury, a related dragon who becomes Toothless’s mate. Toothless is not a Deadly Nadder or Monstrous Nightmare; those are separate species with distinct appearances and abilities.
