In How to Train Your Dragon 2, Hiccup is 20 years old when the story begins.

The sequel takes place five years after the events of the 2010 film. Hiccup has therefore grown from a teenage Viking into a young adult who spends much of his time exploring the world with Toothless. His age reflects the film’s broader concerns about responsibility, family, leadership, and the future of Berk.

Hiccup is not yet chief at the beginning of the sequel. Stoick remains the leader of Berk, while Hiccup is still deciding what kind of person and leader he wants to become. The discovery of Valka and the threat posed by Drago force him to confront those questions more directly.

Some viewers remember Hiccup’s age from the first film, when he is approximately fifteen, and carry that number into the sequel. The five-year time jump is the reason the character is 20 in How to Train Your Dragon 2.
