In House M.D., who portrayed the title character, Dr. Gregory House?

The story behind the answer

Hugh Laurie portrayed the title character, Dr. Gregory House, in House M.D. Laurie played House throughout the series, from its 2004 premiere through its 2012 finale.

Before House M.D., Laurie was widely known in Britain for comedy, especially A Bit of Fry & Laurie and Jeeves and Wooster. His casting as an American doctor was notable because Laurie is English and performed House's American accent for the role.

The performance earned Laurie multiple award nominations, including Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He won two Golden Globe Awards for playing House. The character's abrasive manner, dependence on a cane, and unusual diagnostic methods became closely associated with Laurie.

House M.D. made Laurie one of television's best-known dramatic actors. A common mix-up is confusing the actor with David Shore, who created the series, or with Robert Sean Leonard, who played House's closest friend, James Wilson.
