In House M.D., Dr. Gregory House uses a cane as a walking aid.
House walks with a limp because of a muscle infarction in his right thigh, an injury caused by a blood clot that went untreated for too long. The resulting damage leaves him with chronic pain and limited use of the leg. His cane is therefore both a practical medical device and one of his most recognizable visual traits.
The character frequently decorates or changes the cane, including using a flame-patterned version. The prop also reinforces the show’s central contrast: House is an exceptionally skilled doctor whose own body and addiction complicate his life.
Viewers sometimes connect the cane only with House’s painkiller use, but the underlying disability is established as a separate medical consequence. His dependence on Vicodin becomes a major storyline, while the original leg injury explains why he needs assistance when walking.
