In House M.D., House must work in the hospital's walk-in outpatient department, known as the clinic.
The clinic is where patients seek immediate outpatient care without being admitted to the hospital. House dislikes the routine complaints and limited diagnostic puzzles he encounters there, preferring rare and complex cases. His clinic-duty scenes provide much of the series' humor and demonstrate that ordinary symptoms can still require careful medical reasoning.
Clinic duty is also important structurally because it places House in direct contact with patients outside his specialist department. Administrators use it as a disciplinary obligation, especially when House avoids routine responsibilities. The clinic's cases often run alongside the main diagnostic plot and sometimes reveal a useful clue or a broader medical principle.
