James Wilson is House’s closest friend and the hospital oncologist in House M.D.
Robert Sean Leonard plays Wilson, who heads oncology at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. Wilson’s friendship with Gregory House is unusual because he understands House’s intelligence and vulnerabilities while still criticizing his cruelty, dishonesty, and dangerous decisions.
The name is sometimes confused with other doctors from House’s diagnostic teams. Eric Foreman, Robert Chase, and Allison Cameron work with House at different times, but none is his closest friend. Wilson is a separate character whose specialty is oncology and whose relationship with House continues across the entire series.
Wilson’s personal history includes multiple marriages and complicated relationships, but his bond with House remains the show’s central friendship. In the eighth season, Wilson’s cancer diagnosis forces both men to confront mortality and the consequences of House’s choices. Their final storyline gives the series its emotional resolution.
