James Wilson is Gregory House’s best friend and an oncologist in House M.D.
Played by Robert Sean Leonard, Wilson serves as House’s closest personal relationship and one of the show’s main emotional counterweights. His oncology specialty also places him near patients facing serious illness, giving many stories a perspective different from House’s puzzle-solving approach.
Wilson is generally more empathetic and socially cooperative than House, but he is not simply a passive friend. Across the series, he challenges House’s decisions, helps interpret his behavior, and sometimes enables his worst habits. Their friendship repeatedly survives professional disputes, deception, and major personal crises.
The character’s surname can cause confusion because Wilson is not the hospital’s administrator; that role is associated with Lisa Cuddy for most of the series. Wilson’s relationship with House is also distinct from House’s working relationships with the members of the diagnostic team.
