In House M.D., Lisa Cuddy is Dr. House’s department head in the early seasons.
Cuddy is the dean of medicine and hospital administrator at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. As House’s supervisor, she must balance his extraordinary diagnostic success against his disregard for rules, patients, and hospital policy. Their arguments form one of the show’s recurring sources of conflict.
Lisa Edelstein played Cuddy. The character is a highly accomplished physician and administrator who often protects House because his department solves cases that others cannot. At the same time, she imposes limits on his behavior, controls resources, and demands accountability when his decisions endanger patients or staff.
Cuddy’s role is different from that of a department colleague such as Wilson or Foreman. She has institutional authority over the hospital, which places her in the difficult position of managing House while recognizing his unique value. Her professional relationship with him later becomes more personal, adding another layer of tension.
