In Homer’s Odyssey, what is the name of Odysseus’s wife?
Answer
Penelope
Answer
Penelope
In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus’s wife is Penelope, the queen of Ithaca.
Penelope waits for Odysseus during his long absence after the Trojan War. Suitors gather at her palace and pressure her to choose a new husband, believing Odysseus is dead. She delays them with a famous weaving ruse: she says she will decide after finishing a shroud for Laertes, then secretly unweaves the cloth each night.
Her patience, intelligence, and loyalty make her one of the poem’s central figures. Odysseus eventually returns in disguise, tests the situation, and reveals himself after the contest involving his great bow.
Penelope is not one of Odysseus’s supernatural companions. Circe and Calypso are women he encounters during his travels, while Nausicaa helps him after his shipwreck. Penelope remains associated with Ithaca and the household he is trying to regain.
