In Homer’s Iliad, Dolon was the Trojan spy captured and killed by Odysseus and Diomedes.
Dolon volunteers for a dangerous night mission after Hector promises him Achilles’ horses and chariot as a reward. Wearing a wolf skin, he crosses the battlefield to gather information about the Greek camp.
Odysseus and Diomedes are conducting their own night reconnaissance when they detect Dolon. They question him and learn that the newly arrived Thracian king Rhesus and his troops are camped near Troy.
The two Greek heroes kill Dolon after extracting the information, then raid the Thracian camp. The episode appears in Book 10 of the Iliad, a section often called the Doloneia. Dolon’s failed mission illustrates the danger of intelligence gathering during the war.
