In “High Noon,” Gary Cooper plays Marshal Will Kane. Kane is the town marshal of Hadleyville, a fictional community in the New Mexico Territory, and the film follows him on the day he plans to leave town with his new wife, Amy.
His departure changes when he learns that Frank Miller, an outlaw Kane previously sent to prison, is returning on the noon train. Miller and his gang intend to confront Kane, but the townspeople refuse to stand with their marshal. The story unfolds in near real time, heightening the pressure as the train approaches.
A common mix-up is confusing Kane with other Gary Cooper Western roles or with the film’s villain, Frank Miller. Kane is also sometimes described simply as “the marshal,” but Will Kane is his specific character name. The film was directed by Fred Zinnemann and released in 1952.
