In Hesiod’s Works and Days, who gave fire to humans before the creation of Pandora?

The story behind the answer

Prometheus gave fire to humans before the creation of Pandora in Hesiod’s mythic sequence.

Prometheus was a Titan associated with intelligence, foresight, and the protection of humanity. In Greek mythology, he stole fire from the gods and delivered it to humans. Zeus punished this act and devised a broader punishment for humanity, which led to Pandora’s creation.

Hesiod presents Pandora as part of the consequences of the fire theft. Zeus ordered the gods to make her, and the resulting story explains why hardships entered human life. Prometheus’s theft and Pandora’s jar are therefore separate episodes joined by the same conflict between Zeus and humanity.

Later authors and modern culture often make Prometheus the central hero of the fire story. In Hesiod, however, his defiance also triggers severe consequences, including his own punishment and the arrival of Pandora.
