In Hesiod’s Theogony, which god is associated with creating Pandora?

The story behind the answer

In Hesiod’s Theogony, Hephaestus is associated with creating Pandora.

Theogony describes Zeus ordering Hephaestus to make a woman from earth. Hephaestus was the Olympian god of fire, metalworking, craftsmanship, and the forge, making him the fitting divine artisan for this task. Other gods then contribute qualities or adornments to the newly created figure.

The account in Works and Days gives more narrative detail and similarly presents Pandora as a crafted, divinely equipped woman. The creation is part of Zeus’s response to Prometheus, who had deceived Zeus and stolen fire for humans. Pandora’s arrival therefore belongs to a wider myth about the relationship between gods, people, technology, and punishment.

A common mistake is to name Prometheus because he is central to the fire episode. Prometheus does not create Pandora. He is her indirect connection to the punishment, while Hephaestus is the divine craftsman assigned to make her in Hesiod’s account.
