In Hesiod’s Pandora story, who ordered the gods to create her?

The story behind the answer

In Hesiod’s Pandora story, Zeus ordered the gods to create her. The command forms part of Zeus’s punishment of humanity after Prometheus stole fire and gave it to mortals.

Hesiod describes several gods contributing to Pandora’s creation. Hephaestus shapes her from earth, while other deities provide qualities, skills, or adornments. Hermes gives her a deceptive or crafty mind and speech in the account of Works and Days. Zeus then sends her to Epimetheus, Prometheus’s brother, despite Prometheus’s warning not to accept gifts from Zeus.

The myth is therefore framed as a divine response to Prometheus’s act rather than as an independent story about curiosity. Pandora becomes the instrument through which troubles enter human life. Later versions often simplify the cast and focus on her opening the container, but Zeus remains the authority who initiates the creation and dispatch of Pandora.
