In Hesiod’s Pandora story, which Titan is Pandora’s husband?

The story behind the answer

In Hesiod’s Pandora story, Epimetheus is Pandora’s husband. He is a Titan and the brother of Prometheus, whose theft of fire provides the reason for Zeus’s punishment in the surrounding myth.

Prometheus warns Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus accepts Pandora anyway. In the story’s symbolic structure, his name is often connected with thinking afterward, while Prometheus’s name is associated with foresight. That contrast helps explain why the brothers respond differently to Zeus’s plan.

Pandora is therefore not married to Prometheus in the original story. Modern adaptations sometimes focus on Prometheus and Pandora together because Prometheus is the better-known figure in the fire myth. Hesiod’s narrative, however, places Pandora with Epimetheus and makes their household the setting for the opening of the jar.
