Prometheus is Pandora’s brother-in-law and warns against accepting Zeus’s gifts in the Hesiodic tradition.
Prometheus is a Titan associated with foresight and cleverness. In the Pandora story, Zeus sends Pandora to Epimetheus, Prometheus’s brother. Prometheus has already warned Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus ignores the warning and takes Pandora into his household.
The episode follows Prometheus’s theft of fire for humanity. Hesiod presents Pandora’s creation and arrival as part of Zeus’s response to that act, making the container story part of a larger conflict between Zeus and the Titan who tries to aid humans.
Prometheus is sometimes described as Pandora’s brother, but that is inaccurate. He is her brother-in-law through Epimetheus. This family relationship is easy to miss because later retellings often focus only on Pandora opening the container and omit the connected fire-theft narrative.
