In Hesiod’s Pandora myth, which god fashioned Pandora’s human body?
Answer
Hephaestus
Answer
Hephaestus
In Hesiod’s Pandora myth, Hephaestus fashioned Pandora’s human body.
Hephaestus, the Greek god of fire, metalworking, and craftsmanship, receives Zeus’s command to make Pandora from earth. The creation resembles a divine workshop project: the gods then add qualities, skills, and adornments to the figure. This is why Pandora is often described as a constructed woman rather than as a naturally born character.
Hephaestus’s role is sometimes mistakenly assigned to Athena because Athena also contributes to Pandora’s preparation. Hesiod says Athena teaches her weaving and dresses her, while other gods provide gifts such as beauty, charm, and persuasive speech. The different contributions explain the name Pandora, commonly interpreted as “all-gifted.” In the myth, craftsmanship is therefore only the first stage. Pandora becomes a complete figure through the combined actions of multiple gods, under Zeus’s direction, before Hermes takes her to Epimetheus.
