In Hesiod’s Greek mythology, Hephaestus created Pandora’s human form from earth.
The story appears most fully in Hesiod’s Works and Days. Zeus commanded the smith-god Hephaestus to shape a woman, giving her a form resembling an immortal goddess. The other gods then contributed qualities, ornaments, or skills.
Hephaestus was the divine craftsman of Greek mythology, famous for forging weapons and armor for the gods. His role in making Pandora connects her creation with the larger Greek theme of divine craftsmanship.
Some retellings simplify the story by saying that all the gods created Pandora together. That is broadly true of her gifts, but Hesiod specifically assigns the making of her physical form to Hephaestus.
