In Hesiod’s creation story, which god made Pandora’s crown?

The story behind the answer

In Hesiod’s creation story, Hephaestus made Pandora’s crown.

Hephaestus was the Greek god of fire, metalworking, craftsmanship, and the forge. Zeus ordered him to fashion Pandora’s body from earth, making the god an important part of the episode even before the crown is mentioned. Hesiod then describes a golden crown or headpiece made for Pandora and decorated with figures associated with the natural world.

The crown contributes to the myth’s presentation of Pandora as an artificially constructed, beautiful figure. She is not born in the ordinary human way; instead, the gods assemble her through craftsmanship, clothing, adornment, and bestowed qualities.

This role is separate from Athena’s contribution of clothing and Aphrodite’s contribution of beauty and ornaments. Because later summaries often merge all divine gifts together, readers may incorrectly attribute every physical feature to Hephaestus. In Hesiod’s account, however, his distinctive role is the artisan’s: he shapes Pandora and makes her crown.
