In Hesiod’s account, who fashioned Pandora’s body from earth?

In Hesiod’s account, Hephaestus fashioned Pandora’s body from earth. Zeus ordered him to create the woman as part of a response to Prometheus’s theft of fire for humanity.

Hephaestus was the Greek god of metalworking, fire, craftsmanship, and the forge. His role makes him the fitting artisan for creating a figure by divine command. Hesiod describes Pandora as being formed from earth and given a human-like shape.

Other gods then contribute gifts or qualities to Pandora. Athena is associated with clothing and adornment, while Hermes gives her speech and a deceptive or misleading character in Hesiod’s version. Aphrodite contributes beauty and charm in later summaries of the myth.

Hephaestus should not be confused with Zeus, who commands the creation, or with the other gods who supply Pandora’s attributes. The myth separates the authority to order her making from the craftsmanship of producing her body.
