In Hesiod’s account, which god taught Pandora the skill of weaving?

The story behind the answer

In Hesiod’s account, Athena taught Pandora the skill of weaving. The goddess associated with wisdom, crafts, and warfare contributes clothing and textile knowledge to Pandora’s preparation.

This detail shows that Pandora’s creation is collaborative. Hephaestus shapes her, other gods provide qualities or adornments, and Athena supplies a distinctly domestic and technical craft. Weaving was a major skill in ancient Greek social and economic life, so the reference makes Pandora appear fully equipped for human society rather than simply manufactured as a decorative figure.

Different translations summarize the gifts in slightly different ways, and later retellings often omit the individual divine contributions. Athena’s role is nevertheless part of the Hesiodic tradition. She should not be confused with Aphrodite, who is associated with beauty and desire in the broader presentation of Pandora’s gifts.
