In Greek mythology’s Pandora story, which deity ordered Pandora’s creation as a punishment for humanity?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology’s Pandora story, Zeus ordered Pandora’s creation as a punishment for humanity.

According to Hesiod, Zeus became angry after Prometheus stole fire and gave it to human beings. The gift allowed people to develop skills and technologies, but Zeus treated the theft as a challenge to divine authority. He therefore devised a punishment that would affect humanity as a whole.

Hephaestus formed Pandora from earth, while other gods contributed abilities, adornments, or gifts. Hermes gave her a deceptive character in Hesiod’s account, and the gods sent her to Prometheus’s brother Epimetheus. Although Prometheus warned Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, Epimetheus welcomed Pandora.

The myth therefore links Pandora directly to the conflict between Zeus and Prometheus. Her arrival is not an isolated event: it is the second part of Zeus’s retaliation after the theft of fire.
