In Greek mythology, why did Zeus order Pandora’s creation?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Zeus ordered Pandora’s creation to punish humanity for stolen fire.

Prometheus had taken fire from the gods and given it to humans. Zeus responded by planning a punishment that would affect both Prometheus and humankind. Pandora became the divine gift sent to Epimetheus, Prometheus’s brother.

The story is not simply about curiosity. In Hesiod’s telling, Pandora’s arrival is part of a larger explanation for why human beings experience toil, illness, and other hardships. The opened vessel releases forces that had not previously afflicted people in the same way.

Prometheus’s fire theft also gives the myth a cultural dimension. Fire represents technology, craft, cooking, and civilization. Pandora’s story consequently explains suffering as the consequence of humanity’s relationship with divine power.
