In Greek mythology, whom did Pandora marry despite Prometheus’s warning?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Pandora married Epimetheus despite Prometheus’s warning.

Epimetheus was a Titan and the brother of Prometheus. His name is commonly interpreted as “afterthought,” contrasting with Prometheus, whose name is associated with forethought. Zeus sent Pandora to Epimetheus as part of the punishment imposed after Prometheus gave fire to humanity.

Prometheus had warned his brother not to accept gifts from Zeus. Epimetheus nevertheless accepted Pandora, who arrived carrying the container later known in English as Pandora’s box. When Pandora opened it, troubles escaped into the world, while hope remained inside according to the usual reading of Hesiod’s account.

The story is often simplified as a romance, but Hesiod presents Pandora’s arrival as a divine punishment and a source of suffering for humankind. Epimetheus is therefore important because his acceptance of Pandora connects the Prometheus fire story with the origin of human misfortunes.
