In Greek mythology, whom did Pandora marry before the container was opened?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Pandora married Epimetheus before the container was opened.

Epimetheus was the brother of Prometheus, the Titan associated with giving fire to humanity. His name is commonly interpreted as “afterthought,” contrasting with Prometheus, whose name is linked to forethought. In Hesiod’s account, Prometheus warns Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus accepts Pandora.

Pandora’s arrival is part of Zeus’s punishment of humanity after Prometheus steals fire and gives it to mortals. The marriage places the newly created woman inside the household where the sealed vessel is kept.

Some modern retellings focus almost entirely on Pandora and omit Epimetheus. That omission can make the myth seem like an isolated story about curiosity, although the ancient narrative connects the container to the conflict among Zeus, Prometheus, Epimetheus, and humankind.
