In Greek mythology, who was the twin sister of Apollo?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Artemis was the twin sister of Apollo.

Artemis and Apollo were children of Zeus and Leto. Their birth was difficult because Hera opposed Leto, and many traditions say Leto found refuge on the island of Delos. Artemis was born first and then helped with Apollo’s birth in some ancient accounts.

Artemis was a goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, and childbirth. She is commonly shown carrying a bow and accompanied by animals. Apollo was associated with music, prophecy, healing, and the Sun in later tradition, so the twins have related but distinct identities.

Artemis is often compared with the Roman goddess Diana, who became her Roman equivalent. She should not be confused with Athena, another major Greek goddess who was linked with wisdom and warfare rather than hunting.
