Pandora was the first woman created by the gods in the Greek myth associated with Pandora’s Box.
According to Hesiod, the god Zeus ordered her creation as part of a punishment for humanity after Prometheus gave people fire. Several gods contributed gifts to Pandora, including beauty, skill, and persuasive speech. Her name is commonly explained as meaning “all-gifted” or “all-giving.”
Pandora is often described in modern retellings as opening a box, but the earliest Greek versions refer to a large storage jar. The “box” wording became standard much later through translation and artistic tradition. The myth explains how suffering and other troubles entered the human world, while one final thing remained inside the container.
