In Greek mythology, who was Pandora’s husband when she received the famous jar?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Epimetheus was Pandora’s husband when she received the famous jar.

Epimetheus was the brother of Prometheus and belonged to the Titan generation. Zeus sent Pandora to him after the creation of the first woman. Prometheus had warned Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus ignored that advice and took Pandora as his wife.

The name Epimetheus is commonly explained as “afterthought,” contrasting with Prometheus, whose name is associated with forethought. That contrast reinforces the brothers’ different roles: Prometheus anticipates danger, while Epimetheus recognizes consequences afterward.

Later retellings often focus only on Pandora’s curiosity and omit Epimetheus. In Hesiod’s narrative, however, his acceptance of Zeus’s gift is a key part of the plot and helps connect Pandora’s story to the Prometheus myth.
