In Greek mythology, Pandora’s husband was Epimetheus when she brought the jar to humanity.
Epimetheus was a Titan associated with afterthought and the consequences of decisions. He was the brother of Prometheus, whose name is associated with forethought. In Hesiod’s account, Prometheus warns Epimetheus not to accept a gift from Zeus, but Epimetheus accepts Pandora when she arrives.
Pandora’s arrival forms part of Zeus’s punishment of humanity after Prometheus stole fire for mortals. The myth connects the brothers’ contrasting qualities with the plot: Prometheus recognizes danger, while Epimetheus accepts the divine gift despite the warning.
Epimetheus is sometimes confused with Prometheus because both are central Titans in the same story. Prometheus is the fire-bringer and Pandora’s brother-in-law; Epimetheus is Pandora’s husband. This relationship is separate from the question of who physically opened the container in different retellings.
