In Greek mythology, who was Pandora’s father-in-law according to the story of her marriage?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Iapetus was Pandora’s father-in-law through his son Epimetheus.

Iapetus was one of the twelve Titans, the children of Uranus and Gaia. Classical genealogies make him the father of Prometheus and Epimetheus, as well as Atlas and Menoetius in widely transmitted traditions. Since Epimetheus is Pandora’s husband, Iapetus occupies the genealogical position of her father-in-law.

This relationship is not usually emphasized in short retellings of Pandora’s story. The myth is more often framed around Zeus, Prometheus, Epimetheus, and the opening of the jar. Nevertheless, the family connection follows directly from the Titan genealogy.

Greek mythology contains several overlapping family traditions, and ancient authors do not always present every relationship identically. Iapetus’s parentage and children are, however, standard features of the usual Olympian-era genealogical account.
