In Greek mythology, who was Pandora’s daughter and the mother of the Hellenic race?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Pyrrha was Pandora’s daughter and the mother of the Hellenic race.

Pyrrha was traditionally the daughter of Pandora and Epimetheus. She married Deucalion, the son of Prometheus, and the pair became the principal survivors of a devastating flood sent by Zeus. After the waters receded, they restored humanity by throwing stones behind them; the stones became people.

Pyrrha’s genealogy varies among ancient sources, but her connection with Pandora is a standard part of the mythic tradition. She is also important because Greek myth uses her story to explain the origins of humankind after the flood and the ancestry of the Greeks.

The name “Hellenic” relates to Hellen, who is traditionally presented as a son of Deucalion and Pyrrha. Hellen then became the mythical ancestor of the Hellenes, the ancient Greeks. This later genealogy is distinct from the jar episode, but it places Pandora within a wider sequence of origin myths.
