In Greek mythology, who stole fire for humanity and triggered Zeus’s punishment involving Pandora?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Prometheus stole fire for humanity and triggered Zeus’s punishment involving Pandora.

Prometheus was a Titan associated with forethought, intelligence, and technical skill. In the best-known version of the myth, he took fire from the gods and gave it to humans, enabling cooking, metalworking, and other forms of civilization. Zeus responded by arranging a punishment for both Prometheus and humankind.

Prometheus’s own punishment was severe: he was bound to a mountain, where an eagle repeatedly consumed his liver. Because he was immortal, the liver regenerated and the torment continued until Heracles eventually freed him in later mythology.

Pandora’s creation was the punishment directed at humans. Zeus ordered the gods to make her, and she brought the vessel of troubles into the human world. Prometheus and Pandora therefore belong to the same chain of events, although Pandora herself is created by the gods rather than by Prometheus.
