In Greek mythology, Zeus orders Pandora’s creation as a punishment for humanity.
Hesiod links the episode to the conflict between Zeus and Prometheus. After Prometheus benefits humans by giving them fire, Zeus arranges a countermeasure intended to bring suffering to the human race.
Zeus commands the gods to fashion a woman from earth and give her attributes. Pandora is therefore not simply an independent mortal character; she is created through a divine plan involving several Olympians.
The punishment is sometimes described too simply as revenge for the theft of fire. Hesiod’s story also concerns sacrifice, divine-human boundaries, and the burdens of mortal life. Pandora’s arrival introduces troubles, but the myth does not say that she personally invents every evil.
