In Greek mythology, Zeus ordered the gods to create Pandora after Prometheus gave fire to humans.
Prometheus had tricked Zeus in a sacrificial dispute and later stole fire for mortals. Zeus responded by planning a punishment for humanity. He instructed the gods to fashion Pandora, who would receive different qualities and gifts before being sent among humans.
The episode is part of Hesiod’s explanation for why people must work and why suffering exists. Zeus’s role is important because Pandora is not an accidental figure who happens to discover a mysterious container; her arrival is embedded in a deliberate divine punishment. The myth also contrasts Zeus’s authority with Prometheus’s defiance, making Pandora’s story part of the larger conflict between the Olympian ruler and the fire-bringing Titan.
