In Greek mythology, who ordered the creation of Pandora as part of his punishment of humanity?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Zeus ordered the creation of Pandora as part of his punishment of humanity.

Hesiod connects Pandora’s creation with Prometheus’s theft of fire for humans. Zeus, angered by the theft, arranged a counterstroke: the gods helped create and adorn a woman who would bring a new burden to humankind. He then had Pandora taken to Epimetheus, Prometheus’s brother.

The myth is not simply a story about curiosity. In Hesiod’s account, Pandora is a divine instrument within a larger explanation for why human life includes suffering and difficult work. Later versions often focus more strongly on the moment she opens the container.

The gods involved differ in their specific roles across translations and retellings, but Zeus is consistently the authority behind the plan. He should not be confused with Hephaestus, who is commonly described as shaping Pandora from clay, or Hermes, who escorts her to Epimetheus.
