In Greek mythology, who opened Pandora’s box and released its contents?

The story behind the answer

Pandora opened the container in the Greek myth of Pandora’s box and released its contents.

In Hesiod’s account, Zeus had Pandora sent to humanity after Prometheus stole fire for humans. Pandora was created by the gods and given gifts associated with beauty, skill, persuasion, and curiosity. She was presented to Epimetheus, Prometheus’s brother, who accepted her despite Prometheus’s warning.

The myth says that Pandora opened a sealed container kept in her home. Troubles escaped and spread among humans, while hope remained inside. The familiar phrase “Pandora’s box” is slightly misleading: the earliest Greek version describes a large storage jar, not a small box.

Pandora is often called the first woman in Greek mythology. Her story appears chiefly in Hesiod’s Theogony and Works and Days, although later retellings changed details about the container and the role of hope.
