In Greek mythology, Zeus gave Pandora the jar or box that she was warned not to open. In Hesiod’s account, Zeus arranged Pandora’s creation as part of his punishment of humanity after Prometheus stole fire for mortals.
The container held destructive forces that had previously been separated from human life. Pandora was instructed not to open it, but curiosity or temptation led her to lift the lid. The released contents then afflicted humanity, while Hope remained within.
Different retellings vary in details, including who physically delivered the container and how Pandora was persuaded to open it. Zeus’s central role is stable in the standard myth: he is the ruler who orders Pandora’s creation and uses the jar in the punishment story.
