In Greek mythology, who gave Pandora her famous golden crown?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Athena gives Pandora a golden crown. Hesiod describes the goddess as clothing Pandora and placing a golden crown on her head as part of the divine gifts that complete her creation.

The crown contributes to Pandora’s striking appearance. Hephaestus first forms her from earth, then the gods add ornaments, clothing, skills, and personal qualities. The episode presents Pandora as a carefully decorated divine creation rather than as a naturally born human woman.

A common mix-up is to attribute every gift to Aphrodite because she is associated with beauty. In Hesiod’s account, however, the gifts are distributed among several gods. Aphrodite contributes charm and desire, while Athena is linked with clothing, craft, and the golden crown.

The crown is one detail in the longer description found in Works and Days. Later summaries often compress the passage into the idea that “all the gods” gave Pandora gifts, which can obscure who provided particular items.
