In Greek mythology, Daedalus designed and built the Labyrinth for King Minos.
Daedalus was an ingenious Athenian craftsman and inventor who became associated with Crete. King Minos commissioned him to construct a maze-like structure at Knossos to contain the Minotaur, the offspring of Pasiphae and a bull.
The Labyrinth story is connected with Theseus, who entered the structure and escaped after receiving help from Ariadne. Daedalus later helped Ariadne indirectly by explaining how a person could navigate the maze, although versions differ in how this assistance is described.
Daedalus is also famous for making wings from feathers and wax so that he and his son Icarus could escape Crete. Icarus flew too close to the Sun, causing the wax to melt. The Labyrinth and the wing story are separate episodes in Daedalus’s mythic biography.
