In Greek mythology, who created Pandora’s body from earth and water?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Hephaestus created Pandora’s body from earth and water. Hesiod’s Works and Days describes Zeus ordering Hephaestus to form the first woman, after which the other gods supply her with qualities and gifts.

Hephaestus is the Greek god of fire, metalworking, forging, and craftsmanship, so shaping a human figure is consistent with his mythological role. The creation scene presents Pandora as a divine work assembled through multiple contributions rather than as a naturally born woman. Her appearance and abilities are completed by the gods before she is sent to Epimetheus.

This episode should not be confused with the creation of humans from Prometheus’s clay in later artistic and literary traditions. Prometheus is central to the fire story and is Pandora’s brother-in-law in the usual genealogy, but Hesiod assigns the physical fashioning of Pandora to Hephaestus.
