In Greek mythology, who created Pandora, the woman associated with the famous container?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Hephaestus created Pandora, the woman associated with the famous container.

Hesiod’s account says Zeus ordered the divine craftsman Hephaestus to make Pandora from earth. Several gods then gave her qualities or gifts, helping explain her name, which is commonly interpreted as “all-gifted” or “all-giving.” She was presented as a beautiful woman whose arrival brought suffering to humanity.

Pandora’s story appears in Hesiod’s Works and Days, written in ancient Greece. The familiar expression “Pandora’s box” is technically a later misunderstanding: the ancient Greek text describes a jar, not a box. The word “box” became established through later translation and retelling.

Hephaestus is especially associated with metalwork, fire, invention, and divine craftsmanship. His role in making Pandora is therefore part of a wider mythological pattern in which gods construct or equip remarkable beings.
